Throughout the years and currently, tourists think the end all be all is the Las Vegas Strip. Everyone seems to forget the “Original Vegas” or know today as the “Fremont Street Experience”. The locals of Vegas’ and businesses downtown have created their own type of Vegas that is surely not to be overlooked. Same rules as The Strip applies to Downtown in regards to open containers, street performers and vendors alike, but the vibe and atmosphere of DTLV is second to none. Bars are the norms and not clubs, don’t you dare think about offering bottle service, as a mutiny will be sure to arise.
One of the newer establishments known as, Turmeric Flavors of India, opened back in October 2016 and has been a staple for those in the “know” ever since. Located at 700 E. Fremont Street directly across from the “Container Park” adjacent to 6th Street Turmeric offers authentic Indian cuisine with a modern twist. Their menu is filled with elevated Indian classics offering traditional fare and naturally includes several vegan, and gluten free options without sacrificing flavor. Not only is their food spectacular they undeniably have one of the best views on their rooftop bar, which offers sweeping views of downtown’s vibrant arts and cultural scene.
As a local myself whenever I have friends or family in town I am sure to bring them here for Turmeric’s happy hour. Their happy hour menu boasts a variety of tapas with eclectic traditional Indian cuisine but with a twist. Great for going with a group of people so you can try everything while sharing. In my opinion there are three MUST try’s on their happy hour menu:
Tandoori Wings: Each order comes with three wings and you have the choice of three sauces to choose from (spicy bbq, honey glazed, & original). The original are fantastic as well as the spicy bbq.
Masala Shrimp Tacos: Each order comes with two tacos. You might be saying to yourself but tacos..at an Indian restaurant. This is where Turmerics modern twist comes in as the tortillas are actually Indian Roti bread, which is a flour based flatbread. They’re absolutely to die for!
Chicken Pakora Bites: Each order is served with a sriracha chutney. Pakora bites are basically the Indian version of boneless wings or chicken poppers, except with an immense amount of flavor and the spicy sriracha chutney they serve it with complements each piece perfectly.
Turmeric not only offers amazing food but their rooftop a night turns into a real party. They have live music throughout the week and Thursday-Saturday live DJ’s. They’ve hosted events with DJ’s from Shade 45, Las Vegas’s local based house music titan MNTRA, as well as having reggae and latin nights. They have great drinks as well as a fantastic tap beer selection (careful they have Moscow mules on draft!), along with an absolutely wonderful and knowledgeable staff. In my opinion they have one of the best views of the entire Fremont scene.
To end it’s pretty simple. Turmeric Flavors of India is a MUST go to when you are in the downtown Las Vegas area. You will not be disappointed!!
